Spaces and contemporary artistic practice: shifting sites, changing art, and
cultural authority
********************************************************
Much contemporary art is engaging with new methods of production and display
which challenge previous notions of what art is, how it should be
interpreted and where it should be displayed. The use of new technologies,
for example, or the utilisation of popular cultural referents, problematises
conventional notions of 'art'; artworks in places other than the gallery or
the public square, as well as site-specific work, again have an ambiguous
status; while many artists are refusing to occupy the position of
authoritative creator of cultural meaning by insisting that the audiences
for their work are active participants in the creation of its meaning. This
session seeks to explore the implications these changes have for the
material, institutional and symbolic status of art, the construction of
image spaces, and how evolving art-practices are mediated by audiences.
Specific issues which potential contributors might like to address include:
* the implications of these changes to the materiality of art and the
consumption of image spaces
* how adjustments in material form encourage a continuous reassessment of
what counts as art, or non-art.
* whether references to popular cultural icons suggest a more inclusive
cultural era, or, perhaps, the appropriation of popular cultural idioms by
an increasingly voracious arts establishment
* the extent to which the growth of site specific art, and work which is
more environmentally responsive, signals. disillusionment with the
institutional authority of the arts establishment and with the detached
display of artwork within the white cube space.
* case studies of artists experimenting with alternative, non-aligned forms
of production and display involving non-studio based work, artist-run
collectives, warehouse and domestic exhibitions, public art, collaborative
ventures, and so on.
Both theoretical and empirically grounded papers are welcome.
