Contributions are invited for a special issue of the JOURNAL OF RURAL
STUDIES focussing on 'Young Rural Lives'. This issue will include papers
in children's and youth studies which document contemporary theory and
research. It will highlight the diversity of young people's experiences
in different countries and societies, in different physical and material
environments, and within different frames of cultural meaning. Current
and historical perspectives are encouraged.
Contributions are especially welcome where they address one or more of
the following themes and questions:
*** Theme 1: THEORETICAL DIRECTIONS
a. How can we conceptualize children and/or youth (issues) in rural
societies and/or environments?
b. How do studies of children and youth contribute to wider debates
within rural studies?
*** Theme 2: METHODOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
a. What are appropriate and effective ways of researching
children's/youth issues in rural studies?
b. What are the implications of exploring the interface between academic
and youth agendas/discourses/voices/knowledges?
*** Theme 3: RESEARCH DEVELOPMENTS
a. Who are rural children/youth? [possible keywords: demographics,
diversity, identities]
b. How do children/youth live in rural societies and environments?
[possible keywords: lifeworlds, youth cultures, social and power
relations, negotiation]
c. How do children/youth understand and/or interact with their rural
environments? [possible keywords: environment, landscapes, public space,
spatial politics]
d. What relations and conditions shape children's/young people's
experiences of rural life? [possible keywords: class/gender/ethnicity/
sexuality, employment, poverty, services, culture, political systems]
e. How do children/youth experience and/or participate within their
rural societies? [possible keywords: agency, competency, participation,
marginalisation, rights, citizenship, resistance]
Individuals and research teams interested in contributing to this
special issue should first submit a detailed abstract of 300-400 words
outlining the character of their proposal. Abstracts should be received
by 30 August (see submission details below) and will be reviewed to
ensure contributions are invited from as wide a range of perspectives
and rural societies/environments as possible. This review process will
be completed in early September after which a selection of approximately
10
contributions will be invited for submission by 31 December 2000. All
submissions will be subject to the normal refereeing procedures for the
Journal of Rural Studies.
All submissions of abstracts and general inquiries should be sent by
email
to: [log in to unmask]
Please consider this invitation as a real opportunity to extend rural
youth studies. I look forward to hearing of any contributions you might
offer.
