Can I make a request that all users of this list turn off all encoding of their messages? It is
impossible to send a virus or worm in a straightforward text message such as this you are
reading now. As it happens, I don't use Outlook and thus am not affected by any of these
malicious or idiotic attachments. I do accept some attachments, but never open them without
running them through a virus checker (I use McAfee, for what it is worth, updated weekly at
least) before opening them. I also use zonealarm2 to detect external malicious attacks on
my computer, and keep cookies turned off.
The message is NOT enhanced by colour, pretty spacing or other rubbish that Outlook
spawns if left to its own devices. As my program connects each message to its predecessor in
a process known as threading I also don't need a copy of what was sent to me to work out
what the context of the message is. On average, my computer connects for less than a minute
a day to collect and send all my mail. I have not in the 19 years I have been using and
programming computers ever had a successful virus or worm attack - and I detected three
circulating in my hospital before IT did!
The internet is now a seriously unpleasant place, and you should not be on the streets
without good protection.
Best wishes,
Rowley Cottingham
