I agree that it is very difficult to gain a lot from 2 years of research. I
did one year and gained an MD, but have spent much of my SpR training
writing it up! It has been a very ahrd slog - often at the expense of other
things. As a result I have published little and am trying to amend that at
present, but I think one has to be realistic about the amount of work that 2
years can produce. In terms of career development, it is hard if there is no
follow-on and A&E has very little in the way of an academic track record. I
know there is a drive to change the situation, but with very little research
funding around and not much university support (a problem we have had
locally) it is certainly an uphill struggle. However, I think if you are
determined and keen , then that is exactly what the specialty needs - good
luck!
