I am in the process of defining the required metadata for an Asset
Management project at BBC Online, with the specific aim that we manage the
rights issues which arise as a result of commissioning material,
particularly art works for publication on one of our sites.
I am looking for advice and ideas about the best practice with regard to
structuring Qualified DC for our web assets, particularly images and art
works. I am in the process of defining the required metadata for an Asset
Management project at BBC Online, with the specific aim that we manage the
rights issues which arise as a result of commissioning material.
Having decided to use DC as a basis for this work, I am now trying to
establish a best practice for extending the DC, as considerable detail will
be required in some fields e.g. Creator and Rights.
I read with great interest about the Arts and Humanities Data Service and
their methodology for creating DC sub-elements, which I thought suitable for
our requirements. However, I realise that the use of Qualified DC would be a
more standard and therefore interoperable approach.
What I cannot find anywhere are practical tutorials or papers which explain
how to add qualifiers. For example, if I want to identify the email address,
physical address and contact phone no for the creator, how do I add that
level of detail.
Using the AHDS model I would have set up subelements Creator.email
Creator.address and Creator.telephone, within DC. These would have been
defined purely to suit our requirements, but I could see the logical
structure.
I now have a whole raft of questions which I am having some difficulty in
answering, including:
Can I use any terms I want to?
Would a set of Qualifier terms constructed specifically for our use
constitute a schema, or are they just extensions to DC?
Does any documentation exist on adding Element Refinement in this practical
sense?
Is there any training available in the use of DC?
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Thanks in anticipation
