Gerontology is a rapidly expanding and increasingly important subject, yet
the opportunities for study at an advanced level are limited. The
University of Wales, Bangor, offers a range of part-time courses in
Gerontology, designed for all those who have an interest in or whose work
involves older people; health care; statutory, private, voluntary and
charitable services; planning; housing; residential care.
Aims
The overall aim of the course is to improve the scientific and professional
knowledge of those concerned with understanding the ageing process and with
providing services for older people and their carers based on research
findings. Emphasis is on the normal ageing process and the maintenance of
health and independence, relating these topics to policy decisions, service
provision, planning and management. Wherever possible a comparative,
cross-cultural perspective will be adopted.
Rural Ageing & International Programmes
Situated in a rural area, gerontologists in Bangor have a particular
interest in rural ageing. An arrangement with the Sanders Brown Center for
Aging, University of Kentucky, makes it possible for students to complete
part of their course in the USA. Similar arrangements exist within the
Centre for Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine at the Medical Institute of
Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University, Pune, Maharashtra, India.
