ABOUT THE RESEARCH GROUP (CAVA):
(http:/www.leeds.ac.uk/cava)

The Department of Sociology and Social Policy has been awarded
funding from the Economic and Social Research Council to
establish a Research Group for the Study of Care, Values and the
Future ofWelfare. The focus is on changes in care, intimacy and
family life, and its five-year research programme started on 1
October 1999, underthe Directorship of Professor Fiona Williams.
There are six researchstrands in the research programme, each
with its own small team of between three and nine researchers. The
leaders of these strands are Professor Fiona Williams (Director),
Professor Carol Smart (Deputy Director), Professor Alan Deacon,
Professor Sasha Roseneil, and Dr Simon Duncan (of the University
of Bradford). Together they make up the Management Team of
CAVA. The Research Group as a whole has sixteen
researchers contributing between 10% and 100% of their time to
CAVA, along with one full-time secretary and one half-time
secretary.

STRAND 3: CARE, DIVERSITY AND FAMILY LIFE

Strand 3 involves FOUR linked qualitative empirical
projects, based in different localities in Yorkshire and Lancashire:

1.The Mothers and Employment Study (REF 036-043-004-027)) -
this study will be led by Professor Simon Duncan and it will explore
questions of how mothers who live with their partners choose to
combine paid employment with care of their children and
responsibilities towards their partners. This will be undertaken in
the context of different social groups defined by class, ethnicity, and
‘family values’. This project will last for 24 months.

2.The Divorce and Marital Separation Study - this will be undertaken
by Professor Carol Smart and Dr Bren Neale and will research how
a 'rupture' to family life like divorce changes peoples' ideas and
practices in relation to mutual obligations and care. This will be
explored in a range of different 'familyscapes' and will include
perspectives from two generations of family members. We are not
seeking to employ a research fellow for this position.

3.The Transnational Kinship Study (REF 036-044-004-027) - this
study will explore what impact physical or geographical separation
has on kinship networks and caring practices. It will also focus on
the extent to which these families are 'racialised' by their encounters
with welfare agencies in the UK. It will be led by Professor Louise
Ackers, Dr Jennifer Mason and Professor Carol Smart. This project
will last for 36 months.

4.The Partners and Friendship Study (REF 036-045-004-027) - this
study will focus on patterns of care and obligation which are
emerging amongst those who choose non-conventional
relationships and living arrangements, and amongst those who
choose to remain single. It will explore the meanings attached to
‘partnership’ where sexual partners do not live together, and the
role and meanings of friendship for those who live outside the
conventional co-resident heterosexual household. This will be led
by Professor Sasha Roseneil. This project will last for 24 months.

Each research assistant will work closely the individual project
leaders and will be responsible to them in the first instance.
Professor Smart has overall responsibility for Strand 3.

ABOUT THE POSTS:

We are seeking to appoint 3 Research Fellows. One will work with
Dr Simon Duncan on the Partnered Mothers and Employment
Study. This post will last for 24 months (REF 036-043-004-027).
One will work with Professors Smart and Ackers, and Dr Mason on
the Transnational Kinship Study. This post will last for 36 months
(REF 036-044-004-027). The third post will be with Professor
Roseneil on the Partners and Friendship Study. This post will last
for 24 months (REF 036-045-004-027). All posts will be located at
the University of Leeds and will be under the management of the
Strand 3 leader, Professor Smart.
Although there are 4 discrete projects altogether in Strand 3 it is
expected that everyone working on the Strand will operate
collectively and there will be regular Strand meetings as well as
individual project meetings. In addition all post holders will be
members of the full CAVA research group which meets from time
to time to co-ordinate research across the strands.
