PLEASE BRING THIS OPPORTUNITY (WHICH HAS ALSO BEEN
ADVERTISED IN TODAY’S “GUARDIAN”) TO THE ATTENTION OF
ANYBODY TO WHOM YOU THINK IT MAY BE OF INTEREST.
MANY THANKS.
The University of Luton is offering a 3 year MPhil/PhD research
studentship in Social Policy (with a bursary of £7,588 p.a.), to commence
October 2000.
The project upon which the student will work is likely, in part, to build
upon Hartley Dean’s recent work on popular discourses of poverty and
welfare (see Dean, H. with Melrose, M. [1999] “Poverty, Riches and
Social Citizenship”, Macmillan). It should focus, particularly, on the
question of rights and responsibility and might entail, for example, an
investigation of established and emergent discourses, both at the level
of political debate and at the level of popular morality, concerning the
relationship between rights to welfare provision (to social security,
health care, education, housing, social care, etc.) on the one hand and
socially constructed notions of responsibility (with regard to work,
family, community, etc.) on the other. It is likely that such an
investigation will combine the analysis of literary and documentary
sources, with empirical fieldwork, including interviews. However, the
study, though it will be conducted within the specific context of recent
reforms to the British welfare state under the New Labour government,
will be more broadly situated within the critical traditions and concerns
of Social Policy scholarship. What is more, the precise nature and scope
of the study and the theoretical framework with which it will be
developed will be negotiable between the student and her/his
supervisors.
Informal inquiries about the proposed project and/or about the
Department of Applied Social Studies in which the studentship is to be
