Rowland,
The book "Interviewing as Qualitative Research" by Irving
Seidman, Teachers College Press, 1998, has a couple of really
relevant chapters in it;-
Chapter 6 (14 pages)-
TECHNIQUE ISN'T EVRYTHING BUT IT IS A LOT
Listen More, Talk Less
Follow Up on what the Participant Says
Asks questions when you do not understand
Ask to hear more about a subject
Explore, Don't probe
Listen More, Talk less and ask real questions
Avoid Leading Questions
Ask open-ended questions
Follow Up, Don't Interrupt
Ask partipants to Talk to you as if you were Someone Else
Ask Participants to tell a story
Keep Participants Focused and Ask for Concrete Details
Do not take the Ebbs and Flows for Interviewing too personally
Share experiences on Occasion
Ask participants to reconstruct not remember
Share experiences on occasion
Avoid reinforcing you participants' responses
Explore laughter
Follow your Hunches
Use an Interview Guide Cautiously
Tolerate Silence
Chapter 8 deals with
ANALYSING, INTERPRETING, AND SHARING INTERVIEW MATERIAL
(15 pages)
Managing the data
Keeping interviewing and analysis separate; what to do between
interviews
Tape-recording interviews
Transcribing Interview tapes
Studying, reducing and analysing the test
Sharing interview Data; Profiles and Themes
Making and Analyzing Thematic Connections
Interpreting the Material
As you can see there is quite a range of areas dealt with in
comparatively few pages and so if you are looking for bite size
information, as is often the course when covering a ground of
material in a workshop environment, then this may be ideal for
you. N.B. A quote from a reviewer claims " The best and clearest
introduction to qualitative interviewing I've found - and the only
one I use in my introductory course on qualitative research
methods." - Joseph Maxwell, Harvard University.
As regards audio/videotapes...sorry, I don't know of any, but would
likewise be interested in finding this out if there is anyone out
there who can point in the right direction!
Best Wishes,
Mica Allan

Im wanting to introduce some practical elements to my methods course next
year. Does anyone have any ideas for video or audio source material which
would be good to give examples either on how to interview (the skills of
being a good interviewer) or examples of interview dialogue to get students
thinking about the different meanings which can stem from the same piece of
data. Any suggestions warmly received!
On a related note does anyone know of good textbooks on the paper and pen
approach to dealing with the analysis of qualitative material? Sorry for
the one-sidedness of these requests, I hope any replies may be of some use
to others on the list!
many thanks
rowland
