Interim Saints - June 6th
PHILIP, bishop of Tralles (1st cent)
Saint Philip, one of the first seven deacons, preached and baptized at
Samaria . . . He afterwards became bishop of Tralles; there is no
tradition that he suffered martyrdom.
GURWALL, bishop (6th cent)
S. Gurwall was born in Britain, and is said - but this is questionable
- to have been for some time a disciple of S. brendan in Ireland, and
to have succeeded him as abbot.
GUDWALL, bishop (7th cent)
S. Gulwall or Gudwall was born in Wales, where he was educated and
ordained priest and afterwards bishop, but retired from an active life
into a cave by the seaside with one disciple.
NORBERT, archbishop of Magdeburg (A.D. 1134)
S. Norbert was born at Xanten, in the duchy of Cleves, in the year
1080, of a noble family related to the emperor. From the Breviary: He
became a canon of the cathedral of Xanten, but later underwent a
conversion from his worldly life and adopted a regular rule of life and
became a priest in 1115. He went through France and Germany and other
places preaching the word of God, and with the help of companions who
had joined him, laid the foundations of the Premonstratensian Order and
set up a number of monasteries. In 1126 he was elected Archbishop of
Magdeburg, in which position he carried out reforms in the religions
life of the people and spread the faith among the pagans living nearby.
GILBERT OF AUVERGNE (A.D. 1152)
Of S. Gilbert the Premonstrant little is recorded beyond the fact that
he founded the abbey of Neuffontaines on the land of which he was lord.
Hence he is shown with a portion of land in his outstretched hands.
Oriens.
