Please forward. Apologies for cross posting.
PROJECT CO-ORDINATOR AND TWO GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION OFFICERS
The History Data Service and the Data Archive at the University of Essex
have jointly received funding with EDINA, part of Edinburgh University Data
Library, to carry out two feasibility studies into the provision of a
gazetteer service and a geo-spatial browser. The Geo-data Browser Project
will investigate the feasibility of establishing a HE geo-spatial portal in
order to aid the discovery and use of geo-spatial data resources. The
Geo-Crosswalk Project will assess the feasibility of developing and
providing an online British and Irish gazetteer service, which would play a
crucial role in supporting geographic searching.
We are seeking to appoint three members of staff for a nine-month period to
work on these projects.
Project Co-ordinator (Ref. O/701). The Project Co-ordinator will play a key
role in ensuring effective liaison between the project partners (History
Data Service, Data Archive and EDINA); effectively managing the allocation
of time, effort and resources between the projects, and ensuring that the
deliverables are completed on time and to requirements. We are seeking to
appoint an excellent communicator with strong administrative and project
management skills. Educated to degree level, preferably in a social science
subject, the post-holder will have experience of managing projects and
working in an information/service environment. An understanding of the range
and type of geographic data would be a distinct advantage, as would an
understanding of UKHE.
Geographic Information Officers (Ref. O/702). The two Geographic Information
Officers will play a key role in identifying user requirements, reviewing
and recommending metadata standards and controlled vocabularies, and
identifying and assessing resources suitable for inclusion in the browser
and the gazetteer. We envisage that one post-holder will primarily work on
the Geo-data Browser Project and that the other post- holder will primarily
work on the Geo-Crosswalk Project, however, there will be a high level of
collaboration and inter-working, according to the timetable and requirements
of each project. We are seeking to appoint graduates with a degree in
geography or historical geography, preferably with either a post-graduate
degree in information and library science or experience in information
creation and management. An excellent knowledge of the range and type of
geographic information is essential, and knowledge or experience of the use
of geographic information within a HE research or teaching context would be
an advantage. Experience of developing or implementing metadata standards
and/or constructing a gazetteer is also desirable.
The three post-holders will be expected to work closely as a team to achieve
the success of both these projects.
