Another interesting instance of 'preserved' mines is that of radon
(former uranium?) health mines, which a colleague is researching for a
dissertation. Montana, USA has several and there are many in Europe, as
in Germany. A great industrial reuse, in which those who use them
regularly claim near-miraculous pain relief (perhaps a little early yet
for the cancer-incidence studies).
Closer to home, the Nevada State Museum (former Carson City Mint) has an
extensive simulated mine exhibit based on the Comstock mining district
of the 1860s to 1880s. Virginia City, on the Comstock, has some actual
mine tours in the summer while the big Silver Legacy casino in downtown
Reno contains a simulated, 'operational' headframe perhaps larger than
most were in reality. Trust a Nevada casino to go 'over the top' on
this.
