Points well taken: human-'resistant' would be a better term for
nominally-bat-only grates on mine entrances: if a 350 lb. grate can be
manipulated up a cliff with a truck, cable, and pulley, so can an
oxy-acetylene unit or a crowbar+hacksaws+TNT, etc. And yes, filling-in
of abandoned mines and other human-made depressions is a 'superficial'
science for the most part. Still, interesting to hear of an example
where a wildlife-protecting group advocates leaving a category of
abandoned, otherwise hazardous industrial facility largely as is.
