The Ninth International Greening of Industry Network Conference
SUSTAINABILITY AT THE MILLENNIUM:
Globalization, Competitiveness, & the Public Trust
The Greening of Industry Network -- Asia
Chulalongkorn University
Bangkok, Thailand
January 21-25, 2001
Visit <http://www.eric.chula.ac.th/GIN-Asia/> for updates.
Background
Societies and their economies throughout the world are experiencing a
process of rapid globalization. Technological advances and open borders
enable firms to organize the production of goods and services
transnationally. As a result, environmental effects also take place on an
international scale, and the economies of nation states and the policies of
national governments are becoming increasingly intertwined. Real
de-coupling can therefore only take place in a global perspective. Nowhere
in the world is the challenge of "changing course"?of shifting to patterns
of economic development that are less energy, materials, pollution, and
waste intensive?more urgent than in the rapidly industrializing economies
of Asia. This means that for the coming decades, decision-makers can design
and implement strategies effectively only if the global, and especially the
Southeast Asian, context is taken into account.
In its debut as a host for the Greening of Industry Network's annual
conference, the Greening of Industry Network ? Asia is pleased to present
an event that will:
§ Highlight Asia and emerging economies as places that will determine
the world's economic and environmental future;
§ Emphasize emerging markets, themes, partnerships, and tools that have
a real potential for encouraging sustainability;
§ Evaulate the current status and future prospects for key industrial
sectors;
§ Strengthen the Greening of Industry Network in emerging economies.

the Netherlands. The Network's mission is to stimulate, coordinate and
promote dialogue and research of high quality and relevance to ensure that
the activities of industry?including business, labor, consumers, government
