Many of us will remember that when the Coverage element was introduced, it was
specifically for things like duration (e.g., the length of a motion or audio
piece) and spatial coordinates (e.g., longitude and latitude of a map). It was
thought that it would be good to separate out values that you might want to do
calculations on from textual subject terms. This eventually got refered to in
more general terms like time and place and then became more of a subset of
subject. As it is now, for retrieval purposes, we will have to offer a combined
index of both fields in order to offer good subject access -- especially true if
precoordinated terms are in subject.
