NEW 'ON-LINE' RESEARCH MASTERS in ART and DESIGN
<http://www.rgu.ac.uk/mres/>

The Research Masters in Art and Design is a two year part-time networked distance learning
course that offers professional development for designers, artists, research supervisors,
educators, curators, arts administrators, designer-makers and others who are able to apply
research to visual practice.

- preparation for further research to Ph.D
- research supervision and research management
- extending practice through the use of new media technologies

It will be delivered via the Virtual Campus at the Robert Gordon University in Scotland, and was
developed by the Centre for Research in Art and Design at Gray's School of
Art.<http://www.rgu.ac.uk/criad/>

The course is structured using the metaphor of a 'journey', and is divided into six distance
learning modules (each worth 30 Masters level credits), delivered part-time over 90 weeks

- Developing an appropriate research question ('Planning the Journey')
- Putting your project into context ('Mapping the Terrain )
- Planning and structuring your project ('Locating Your Position')
- Using approp. research methodologies & methods ('Crossing the Terrain')
- Evaluating, analysing, and interpreting your ideas ('Interpreting the Map')
- Synthesising and communicating your project ('Recounting the Journey')

Networked media facilitate structured support and feedback by an experienced practice-based
research supervisor and a virtual community of on-line colleagues. Generic support, advice and
training in on-line learning is available from the Virtual Campus and the Centre for Open and
Distance Learning at the University.

Each module costs #1200, and successful completion leads to the award of: Research Masters Degree
(M.Res.) in Art and Design.

Applicants should have a first degree in a relevant subject or equivalent experience and will be
expected to demonstrate evidence of a high standard of professional practice, commitment,
motivation, and independence. A personal computer with CD drive and access to the Internet is also
a pre-requisite.
