Sun Microsystems Inc. (SMI), has an opening for a Human Factors/Usability
Engineer in its Human Factors Engr Group. This position will involve
working with SMI hardware product designers, software developers, human
factors engineers, technical writers, and industrial designers to
support the activities of our United Kingdom's product development
group. The position will involve a broad range of human
factors/usability engineering activities, including:
- user needs assessment, task analysis
- recruiting participants for studies
- planning and conducting laboratory and field usability tests on
hardware, software, and documentation;
- data analysis and presentation of usability study results in support
of new product designs
- in-house design consulting to provide design teams with specific
answers to human factors/usability questions involving hardware and
software.
- GUI design support
- video taping and editing
Our human factors/usability organization is small and therefore
requires that each team member be willing and able to work on a wide
variety of hardware, software, and documentation issues.
Required skills:
- Master's Degree or equivalent experience in Psychology, Human
Factors, Computer Science or other relevant field.
- Experience or university course work in conducting Human Factors or
usability studies.
- 2-4 years' industry experience
- Experience in user task-analysis, product definition, user interface
design and specification.
- Experience in usability evaluation / testing, heuristic evaluation
- Good oral and written communication skills, and ability to work well
with engineers, writers, marketing, etc.
Highly desired:
- Experience with Rapid Prototyping of physical models.
- Experience with information design, GUI design, Unix, C or C++, and
Graphical User Interface (GUI) prototyping tools.
- Usability testing of UNIX systems
