Two Research Assistants (28 months)
Department of Information Systems and Computing (DISC), Brunel, UK.
Two Research Assistant posts are available to work on the DTI/ EPSRC
funded "Millennium Homes" project, led by the Brunel Institute for
Biotechnology at Brunel with Prof. Heinz Wolff. We are looking for an
user interface designer and an experimental psychologist or
ergonomist with interests in human computer interaction to develop
interfaces for houses to support the quality of life of
independent-living frail and elderly people.
Prospective applicants for the post of a research assistant will be
expected to have a good 2:1 or higher in a related field or an
appropriate masters degree. Both appointments will be for 28 months,
and salary will be on the RA1A scale. Supervision will take place
within DISC between Drs Mark Perry and Kate Hone. The positions will
begin from July/August 2000, or as soon as possible afterwards. In
addition, we will finance and would encourage the successful
applicants to study for a PhD in the department if they wish to.
The successful candidate for the user interface design position will
develop software for the Millennium Homes and conduct user trials.
You will be expected to have demonstrable experience in programming
and the design of computer systems, and an interest in the area of
human-computer interaction or usability engineering. You will have a
degree in a design discipline (information systems, computer science,
multimedia), cognitive science, or a related field. The ideal
candidate will have a good honours and/or masters degree in a
relevant discipline which includes user-centred design and
development of interactive computer systems, plus good interpersonal
skills. Specific experience of any of the following would be an
advantage: developing software within a team environment, conducting
usability studies or fieldwork, or working with the elderly.
The successful candidate for the experimental psychologist/ergonomist
post will be required to design and run experiments to investigate
user interactions with speech-based interfaces. The research, while
strongly applied, is also expected to address theoretical issues
within this area of human-computer interaction. The ideal candidate
will have a good honours and/or masters degree in a relevant
discipline such as cognitive or experimental psychology, ergonomics,
or human factors. They will be highly numerate with excellent written
and oral communication skills. Experience of experimental design and
analysis is expected, while additional experience in speech-based
interaction and/or user-centred design would be welcome.
DISC is a highly rated department and aims to promote high quality
research within a supportive environment. Fuller details of the
department are available via: http://www.brunel.ac.uk/depts/cs/
