Dear Elma,
thank you for your perspective. I wholeheartedly agree, but one of the main
inhibiting factors to NHS physiotherapists investing in their own CPD can
be due to high course costs and low pay. If one also considers that course
payment from the individual occurs often after tax has been deducted from
pay, then it becomes an expensive activity. I can speak from experience in
not being granted tax relief on my MSc course fees - in effect this meant
that I had to earn the fees plus approximately an extra third which was
given to the taxman. I little de-motivating. Interestingly enough, the MSc
was in CPD, yet they were not convinced that it would benefit my job!
Ironic!
At the time, my employer also refused to pay for the fees. Retrospectively,
my CPD activity has certainly been of benefit to me, but for others, it all
depends upon whether the individual thinks that it is worth the money.
