I think you have pointed out one of the many paradoxes of networked
learning, or e-learning. I am in general a strong advocate for the
advantages of collaboration in learning processes. But I also know that a
large number of the students in distance education courses have life
situations where they need to be very "instrumental" in their approach. For
many it's a point that obtaining a degree can be achieved in a flexible
manner where they don't have to relate to anything but the subject, the
learning material and perhaps a tutor. I can also imagine that not all
subject areas benefit to the same degree from collaboration.
