I can't understand why no-one has mentioned BSCW - and why it isn't
covered by the comparisons. I tried using WebCT some time back and
found it awful - far too big a learning curve and clearly designed by
techies without too much thought for the user. There's an overview of
BSCW at http://bscw.gmd.de/Overview.html and I believe that it is
free to educational institutions in Europe - having been developed on
an EU grant - one of the better things to come out of those projects!
I found it had much better file transfer facilities, for example, and
was much easier to understand from complete ignorance.
Take a look. There's a practice space and also a tutorial space
provided by one of the users.
