I just can't imagine this nice story being true. The sources imply that he
found the cheapest rag he could and just put it on, much as the Cistercians
used undyed wool for a gray sort of habit.
Francis's supposed habit is on display in Assisi. My recollection is that it
is a brownish gray.
It is conceivable that it is authentic given his immense popularity during
his lifetime.
