The Venerable Brother Fray Pedro de Vergara, a native of the same Village of
Vergara, in Cantabria; son of Lorenzo de la Harraga and Juana de Vergara;
took the habit on the 2nd of July, in the year 1595, in the Convent of
Mexico.
He gave himself wholly over to mortification and penitence. To mortify
himself, he loaded his bowl of soup with chile powder until tears poured
from his eyes as he ate.
He was of singular meekness and constant suffering. He came down with a
cancer, which consumed his entire face. What the doctors most admired was
that he passed more than forty days without eating, patiently enduring his
pains.
The course of his good life run, his Father Confessor Bartholome de Letona
testified that he had committed no mortal sin. On the 19th of May, the year
1646, a great throng gathered for his burial, upon the credit of his great
virtue. Among them was a man who obtained a piece of the two habits taken
from the Venerable Brother as relics. Having spent many years with large
cysts on his eyes, as soon as he applied this piece thereto, the large cysts
fell onto the relic; and his eyes – healthy, clean, and clear – were a
marvel celebrated by all present.
