At the site of the abandoned Finnboda shipyardin Stockholm stands two
equipment cranes constructed 1933 by Hensen in Rotterdam. Since Finnboda
went bankrupt in the beginning of the 1990's, a housing project is plannedat
the site of the former shipyard.
The ambition of the project is to preserve the cranes as they stand, but by
experience of housingprojects in industrial areas one can foresee coming
demands for destruction, based on reasonsof safety and cleanliness.
To support the preservation ambitions or to suggest other solutions to
prevent future damage,it is important to value the technological importance
of the cranes. Since I never have seen anything similar through the years I
ask for international references.
The equipment cranes are of "Hammerhead" type, which are steel truss
constructed tower cranes, constructed 1933 by Hensen in Rotterdam for
Ekensbergs shipyard in Stockholm.
The smaller one of the two were reconstructed between 1953-1956 in order to
achieve higher lifting capacity, ranging from 4.5 to 15 tonnes. The bigger
one were, by same reason, reconstructed 1958 to a lifting capacity between 6
until 32 tonnes.
Because a fusion between the two Stockholm shipyards, the cranes were moved
to the actual site in the beginning of the 1970's, were they still are
maintained, although on a lower level.
Thankful for any support!
Kind regards
Bengt Norling
