Hello
Recently I attended a presentation on 'rationality'.
The speaker quoted a debate between Rudolf Klein & Alan
Williams in which the latter's statement 'policy making is
undoubtedly a process of trial and error, but it should not be done
by blindfolded people taking pot-shots randomly in whatever
direction they happen to be facing! In health care reform we have
witnessed far too much innovation without evaluation. If this is what
'sophisticated rationality' is all about, I think the sooner we go back
to the more naive version the better.'
To which Klein replied that 'there is a danger in having too narrow a
view of the nature of 'evidence' by invoking the name of 'science'.
Those who see themselves as the champions of rationality have
failed to undertsand the processes of policy making and they
define rationality and evidence too narrowly, and in a self-interested
disciplinary way.'
Does anybody know where this is published?
Also in Health & Efficiency, a sociological study of health
economics, the authors note how Mooney & Drummond are keen
that their work should not be interpreted as a personal attack on
the medical profession. Does anybody know of any references
which are more directly confrontational between health economics
& the medical profession (e.g. published debates etc)?(aprt from
Maynard's attack on 'drains doctors in last year's HSJ?)
Thanks
Ruth
