Dear colleagues:
The 3rd Symposium on the Iberian Atlantic Margin will celebrate at Faro
(Portugal) the 25, 26 & 27 of September (2000) and organised by Joao
Alveirinho Dias from the University of the Algarve (see
http://www.ualg.pt/ciacomar/Simp/indexE.html). To facilitate the discussion
of scientific results, and to allow a better synthesis of presented papers,
this Symposium will be organised in simultaneous Thematic Workshops with
wide ranging subjects, and Special Workshops with more specific subjects.
Communications of general interest and with an interdisciplinary character
will be presented during complementary plenary sessions.
We are convening a Thematic Workshop about "Tectonics and Structure of the
Iberian Margin" (See WT4 http://www.ualg.pt/ciacomar/Simp/se_workshops.html
). The aim of the workshop will be to examine current topics related to the
structure and tectonic processes of continental margins, insular margins
and oceanic adjacent areas, by means of the analysis of different
geophysical techniques.
- Plate tectonics: configuration, boundaries and kinematics.
- Ocean-Continental Transition.
- Deep structure and lithospheric architecture.
- Relation between basement and sedimentary cover tectonics.
- Recent or active tectonics and morphologic influences: canyons, scarps
and slides.
- Seismotectonics.
We hope that you will consider submitting an abstract to this session to
present the results of your recent research in this field and area. Please
send your response as soon possible, both to me ([log in to unmask])
directly or to the organisation of the congress. Formats of presentations
are at http://www.ualg.pt/ciacomar/Simp/se_formatos.html.
Also, there is another one special workshop interesting for this group "WS2
- Structure and Tectono-Sedimentary Dynamics of the Gulf of Cadiz" promoted
by the Spanish Project TASYO and convening by Luis Somoza
([log in to unmask]) and Pedro Terrinha ([log in to unmask]), some
topics for this workshop are:
- Plate tectonics vs Salt tectonics (African-European plate boundary):
gravimetry, magnetometry, seismic refraction....
- Structures of mega-slides and gravity gliding along slope (triggering by
tsunamis, gas-hydrates, salt tectonics)
- Fluid seeps (methane, brines...), mud volcanoes and chemosynthetic
communities reported along th Gulf of Cadiz
- Review of the mapping of MOW contourites deposits and channels along
slope.
- Sequence stratigraphy, sea level and climate changes reported on MOW
drifts (Faro, Diogo Cao, etc)
- Relationship between MOW and gas hydrate stability fields
- Future research the Gulf of Cadiz (use of sumersibles, robots, deep
wells, OPD proposal..?)
Un saludo a todo el mundo
I hope you will see at Faro
Tomás
