If you are looking at what potential careers are available, it may be worth contacting one of the many recruitment agencies within the UK, or looking at the various positions available through the industry and related publications (e.g. Conference & Incentive Travel, Meetings & Incentive Travel, Marketing Event, Leisure Week, etc). Links to web sites related to employment are available on World of Events http://www.world-of-events.co.uk (under Employment). As well as the event recruitment agencies, there are, for example, links to jobsunlimited (event related jobs are included in the Guardian on a Tuesday - this is the online version) and jobsupdata, operated by Meetings & Incentive Travel magazine.
In terms of your own plan, I would look at what skills you have developed within your role within the NHS, many of which are transferable into the open market (following the increasingly business like nature of the NHS). Following this, compare what you know/what you have done within events with what you would like to do (based on the jobs adverts etc). You are then in a position to consider your decision or discuss your potential career with a careers adviser (there is a careers service in most cities). I am also aware that many of the agencies offer advice on improving/developing your CV, interview practice, planning your career etc.
I hope that this helps - good luck in your career change - this is an excellent industry to be part of.
Kind regards

I am seeking your advice...please!
While working in the NHS I have been responsible for organising two major
service conferences (c. 200 professionals) and several training and
consultation seminars. I've really enjoyed this type of work and am now
thinking of a change in career to events and conference management. I'm
aware that I'm coming at this from a strange angle, but feel that I've made
a bit of a start.
If anyone has any advice or suggestions as to what my next step might be I'd
be grateful.
