Georg-August-Universität Göttingen
Postgraduate Programme
"The Future of the European Social Model"
The idea of a European social model, historically developed and
identifiable for all its diversity, lies at the centre of this
DFG-financed postgraduate programme. The model’s emergence, operation
and possible variations, its current tendencies towards erosion
including the policies which seek to dismantle it as well as its future
in a global economy comprise the main themes of the programme.
Historical and cross-national comparative research is the programme’s
preferred approach.
This is a multi-disciplinary programme. The following are the core
disciplines together with the professor responsible: Social Policy
(Ostner), Political Science (Lösche), Sociology (Baethge, Kern,
Rosen-baum), Economics (Kucera, Rühmann, Haufler), History (Weisbrod)
and Law (Otto). Teaching is predominantly in German. The programme has
commenced on 01.10.1997
In the third stage of the programme are available
8 doctoral grants from the 1 October 2000
and 2 postdoctoral grants
one from the 1 August 2000
and one from 1 March 2001
. The duration of the grants is for two years, with the doctoral grants
having the possibility of an extension for a further year.
The selection procedure will be based on the following criteria: a good
degree in any of the above or related subjects, knowledge of research
methods, knowledge of foreign languages, the quality, rigour and
originality of the submitted exposé of the proposed research project.
The participants are obliged to participate in the planned programme of
study and to reside in the Göttingen area.
The University of Göttingen takes special care to support the academic
advancement of women. Applications from abroad as well as those from
suitably qualified students in History, Law and Economics for both the
doctoral and postdoctoral places are especially welcome. The closing
date for complete applications is 26 June 2000 (receipt of post).
