JOB TITLE : Social Scientist: Non-Farm Rural Economy

Overall purpose of job
The Social Sciences Department (SSD) is expanding its research
activity in the field of economic and social development related to
the livelihoods of poor people. The purpose of the job is to
contribute to this activity via support to a major research project on
the non-farm rural sector. The overall aim of the project is to
analyse and understand the Non Farm Rural Economy (NFRE) in both
developing and transition economies, and to contribute to policy
development for the sector. There are four components to the project
and the post will entail participation in and support to each of
these. The four components are :
1. Constraints on the entry of rural people into non-agricultural
livelihoods
2. The role of local governance in relation to the promotion of the
NFRE
3. The emergence of the NFRE in Transition economies of Central and
Eastern Europe
4. Methodologies and diagnostic frameworks for understanding the
NFRE.
The appointment will be for three years.
Main Duties
The research fellow will work with an interdisciplinary team of senior
researchers in the Social Sciences department at NRI. Duties will be:
To work with the research team in the generation of ideas concerning
the direction and focus of research components.
To undertake desk and background research, including library searches
and literature reviews.
To produce intermediate research outputs including briefing papers and
synoptic summaries, together with syntheses of and development of case
study material and project data.
To assist in the development of project reports, Web pages, network
series, papers for conference proceedings etc.
To also contribute to peer reviewed outputs, notably Journal articles
There is also a possibility for participation in field research.
Scope
SSD undertakes a large and wide-ranging programme of research relating
to the social and economic development related to the livelihoods of
poor people.
The Department has recently begun work on an investigation of the
non-farm rural sector. The overall aim of the project is to analyse
and understand the NFRS in both developing and transition economies,
and to contribute to policy development for the sector. The project
is being conducted for the Department for International development
(DFID) in conjunction with the World Bank (WB). The intention is that
outputs from the project will assist in the development of policy for
uptake by both DFID and the WB.
Tools of analysis draw both upon qualitative and quantitative
approaches and seek to integrate these more effectively. Activities
to be undertaken in addressing research needs includes the development
of research agenda, participation in background research and
contributions to the production of outputs. Liaison with research
collaborators is also an important part of activities.
The research fellow will work to the lead researchers of the project
under the overall supervision of the deputy head of Department.
She/he will be expected to show initiative and to rapidly develop
expertise in the required areas of work.

Education/Training
A higher degree in a relevant discipline (E).
Direct research experience in an area relevant to the development of
the livelihoods of poor people (E), ideally including overseas/field
experience in either developing and/or transitional economies.(D) An
understanding of policies, issues and concepts relating to the
development of the NFRS (E), in particular experience of policy issues
relating to the development of the sector (D).
Good communication and report writing skills (E)
IT skills including word-processing (E) and spreadsheet packages (D)
Good quantitative skills (D) Fluency in English (E)
Personal Qualities
Self starter with initiative and acceptance of responsibility
Ability to cope with pressure and to work to very tight deadlines on
occasion Good capacity to work both independently and as team worker,
with a sense of humour
