CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT

KING'S COLLEGE LONDON
The Management Centre

SMALL-SCALE ENTERPRISES
IN DEVELOPING AND TRANSITONAL ECONOMIES

A one-day conference on the theme of 'Small-scale enterprises in
Developing and Transitional economies' will be held under the auspices
of the KCL Asia Forum at the Waterloo campus of King's College London
on Friday September 15th 2000. The conference organisers are Professor
Homi Katrak and Roger Strange.

The provisional list of speakers is as below:

· Professor Subrata Ghatak (Kingston University) 'Small and
Medium-sized Enterprises in the Economies in Transition.' · Dr Alan
Mulhern (Kingston University) 'The State and Small-scale Establishments
in Venezuela.' · Dr Ganeshan Wignaraja (Commonwealth Secretariat,
London) 'Firm-level Technology Development: Small and Medium-sized
Enterprises in Africa.' · Professor John Weeks (SOAS, University of
London) 'The Role of Small Enterprises in Developing Countries in the
Long-run: an Empirical Analysis.' · Mr Roger Strange (King's College
London) and Dr Jim Newton (University of Hong Kong) 'The Role of the
State in the Development of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises: a
Comparison of the Silk Industries in China and India.' · Dr Paul Temple
and Mr Qi Yang (University of Surrey) 'The Role of Small Enterprises in
the Growth of Productive Efficiency in China.' · Professor Homi Katrak
(University of Surrey and King's College London) 'Economic
Liberalisation and Small Enterprises' Market Shares: the Indian
Experience.'

There may well be an opportunity to add a few more papers to the
programme., and authors with a paper that fits closely the theme of the
conference are invited to contact either of the organisers as soon as
possible. We are hoping to publish the papers from the conference
either as an edited book or as a special issue of a journal. The
programme will be finalised by late July, and details e-mailed to all
those who have expressed an interest in attending. The KCL Asia Forum
The KCL Asia Forum was founded in 1998 to provide an occasion when the
many Asianists in the London area could meet informally to discuss
their research. The Forum has since met three times at approximately
six-monthly intervals at King's College London, and each evening
meeting has involved the presentation of two papers. For this, the
fourth meeting, a different format has been adopted with seven (or
perhaps more) papers being presented over a full day, and the
geograhical focus not being limited to Asia but widened to include all
developing and transitional economies.

Registration
The conference will be held in the newly-refurbished Franklin-Wilkins
Building at the Waterloo campus of King's College London. The campus is
adjacent to Waterloo BR station, and just south of the National
Theatre. Further details of the campus and of transport details will be
provided on registration.

The cost of attendance is £10 (academics) or £20 (others), and includes
attendance, lunch, refreshments throughout the day, and copies of the
conference papers. Please return the attached registration form to
Roger Strange at the address below by July 28th 2000.
