Hi Chris
I have been told by a techie at BT that a normal phone line will mean your
modem might say 56K but it can only operate at a max of about 33K due to the
restrictions of the basic line. The ISDN type connection will allow you to
buy one of the new 100K plus modems and have it run at that speed
Hope this helps - all to do with capability of the line
