is interesting. i have no doubt that they have something in common, and
anyone looking hard enough will find something. however, i see a mixture of
various categories that are less helpful in clarifying what we are or want
to talk about. there are:
* OBJECT-centered design activities, like airport design, furniture
design, corporate design
* ASPECT-centered design activities, like profile architecture,
functionality
* STUDIES of variables, like physiological studies or ergonomics, usage
studies
* THEORIES, like cultural theory (twice mentioned)
* APPROACHES from a preferred theoretical perspective, like sociology of
knowledge, pholosophy of space
* design-related areas or DISCIPLINES, like marketing, manufacturing
* METAPHORS, like architecture as idea.
design activities are not studies are not theories are not disciplines are
not metaphors.
i propose that we can agree that creativity is not unique to design, nor is
problem solving, planning, or multidisciplinary syntheses and focus on what
designers DO and need to KNOW to distinguish among those phrases listed.
i will be out of the country for a week and cannot respond
