I'm looking for citations of books or articles which address this
issue theoretically (even if it's not the main topic of the work),
explaining why disabled people get constructed as heroic overcomers over
their body, what need that satisfies for ablebodied people. I have
Wendell's short discussion in "The Rejected Body", and a speech by Leslie
Fiedler.
I've usually seen it explained as the flip side of pity, just
another expression of unmitigable difference, and a sort of discursive
weapon against those disabled people who haven't been constructed as
overcoming.
Thanx.
John
