Ex-votos, like their retablo counterparts, are votive paintings on tin. The term "ex-voto" is a Latin word which literally means "dedicated gift." The ex-voto painting is a type of metaphysical thank you note or testimony for miracles performed, prayers that have been answered, or blessings received.
The practice of dedicating this type of painting dates back to the early Greeks. The custom was brought to Mexico by the Spanish and was in vogue among the upper class in colonial times. When the peasants adopted the custom in the 19th century, the wealthy dropped it, and it remains the dominion of the working class even today.
Usage:
Although the ex-voto could have been painted by the person who experienced the miracle, traditionally it was executed on copper, tin, or wood by a professional ex-voto painter in the village. The client would seek out the artist and relate the miracle's scenario, and the painter would interpret the story with words and pictures.
The ex-voto is composed of three parts. (1) At the top is the image of the holy person invoked. (2) The center section, which portrays the miracle, may show from one to three different scenes of the event. (3) The hand-written Spanish text is at the bottom, describing the miracle.
The finished ex-voto is hung on a church wall or shrine near the saint invoked in the illustration. This is done to consummate the giving of thanks and to further reinforce dedication and devotion.
The subjects of the paintings are varied. Some are depictions of ordinary mishaps: a man who has fallen off a horse, a family reunited after a war, a patient surviving major surgery, or a man finding his lost burro. Some of the ex-votos are very dramatic, such as a woman who has taken back her child stolen by in-laws, or the depiction of a catastrophic event like an earthquake, flood, or fire.
The miraculous event depicted in the ex-voto is reduced to its most simple dramatic elements, and the entire story surrounding the circumstances has an admirable directness.
Significance:
Ex-votos have an important significance in the history of art. They serve as fascinating testimony of an individual Mexican's hopes and fears, thoughts, lifestyle, and experiences throughout different historical periods.
I describe splendid " a FORMER BALLOT " of a child who falls in the fire, but does not introduce ustioni. The painting extension an ignited hearth where this child falls with the ace and the arms. In the painting the effigie of the Madonna, pure and immaculate appears. The Madonna wears along blue cape and a red garment and, stringendolo to the chest, holds between the arms the Jesus small. Maria is wrapped from one dazzling dazzling light with around limpid nuvolette. Maria has the eyes revolts towards the child and miraculously she saves it, and in fact the child is undamaged and extension in the ace, still its natural pallor. The parents pales from the fear, kneel down themselves, with hands folded in sign of prayer and thanks. The Madonna has completed a miracle!!
