Dear all,
Following my request at the start of the week for information
on work connected to asylum seekers and UK policy, I have
had some excellent responses.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH everyone; it has really helped!
Below is a general amalgam of the sources sent to me
(in no particular order)>
**********************************************************
-The Refugee Council, Joint Council for the Welfare of
Immigrants, Amnesty etc. will have up to date information
packs (and often pamphlets outlining changes to the
regulations. A good start would be to ring these up and ask
for some information to be sent out to you.
-Another useful start would be to get to a library that
stocks the Journal of Refugee Studies (JRS) -
there are always interesting articles in this journal.
-Articles that spring to mind:
Alice Bloch - Carrying out a survey of Refugees -
not exactly cutting edge research but it is based in Newham
in JRS 12 4 1999
Osten Whalbeck - on kurdish community groups and local
authority policies in the UK JRS 11 1998
Vaughan Robinson JRS 11 1998 -
discusses links between communities and local authorities
Nira Yuval-Davis - in Femminism and Psychology 1994 -
a good discussion of the problems with Uks 'community' policies.
-An example of such policies informing research is in;
Carey-Wood, J. Duke, K. Karn, V. and Marshall, T. (1995)
The settlement of refugees in Britain, Home Office Research
Study #141. HMSO : London.
-Another useful source is to signup to migration-news a
free email subscirption service;
-it provides a monthly news digest about stories to do with
asylum and immigration. If you wish to subscribe, send your
email address to: Migration News
<[log in to unmask]>
-Also useful (especially) for changes to asylum and immigration
welfare changes is in the International jounral of refugee
law -see especially;
Cholewinski, R. (1998) Enforced Destitution of Asylum Seekers in the
United Kingdom: The Denial of Fundamental Human Rights.
International Journal of Refugee Law. 10(3) : 462 - 498.
*********************************************************
This may not be the best source for opinions regarding asylum
seekers, but www.socialistworker.co.uk has been running a number
of articles in the last few weeks which give a different
perspective - although not exactly in an 'academic' style.
Unfortunately this is all I can suggest but I would
recommend reading the paper from the last few weeks to get
a feel for counter-arguments regarding the right-wing press.
***********************************************
-Because the policy is only being implemented from
April this year, there is very little published
material on it. But websites are useful;
-Lots of official documents which outline the policy
are on the Home Office home page
(HUGE detail on the policy, but no critical evaluation)
-The Refugee Council has a useful home page.
-Also, a paper dealing with the last asylum act might
be useful and relevant for background information on
the asylum debate:
Young, C. (1997) 'Political Representations of Geography
and Place in the United Kingdom Asylum and Immigration
Bill (1995)', Urban Geography 18 (1), pp62-73.
***************************************************
-Useful work on asylum seekers within the context
of social housing provision context):
-Roger Zetter and Martyn Pearl, (1999) 'Sheltering on the
margins: social housing provision and the impact of
restrictionism on asylum seekers and refugees in the UK',
Policy Studies, vol 20, no4.
-The same authors have written a book (and other papers) on similar stuff.
******************************************************
-Also could be useful (for Euro comparison and issues
of citizenship) is:
Alan Pred (1998) 'Memory and the cultural re-working
of crisis: Racisms and the current moment of danger
in Sweden, or wanting it like before', Society and Space,
16, pp. 635-64.
-Alan Pred also has a book coming out this summer on similar stuff.
-Also R. Cohen (1996) Fuzzy Frontiers of Identity.
***********************************************************
Cheers everyone!
David.
