We now have a home on the domain, which you can visit at
www.craftvic.asn.au. It contains information and images about our
activities. 'Behind the Scenes' offers a more personable picture of what
goes on here. 'Calendar of Events' provides up to date information about
what is happening in the crafts. The site will be evolving over time, so
please be a regular visitor. We are currently planning a craft skill bank to
facilitate craft commissions.
THE CASE OF THE MISSING TEXTILES
Andrea McNamara's exhibition of textiles based on Tiwi designs from Melville
Island was due to open last Friday, but unfortunately she had no work to
display. Her pieces had been at a machinist in Ferntree Gully for some final
hemming. Unfortunately, the machinist had gone missing under mysterious
circumstances and the textiles could not be found. Andrea had been waiting
outsider her house until midnight the previous night, and eventually had to
console herself on Friday morning to the sad task of ringing people and
telling them not to come to the opening. The Clayton's opening ended up a
surprisingly merry affair, as we listened to Andrea's gripping story of her
adventures in outer Melbourne. She has since worked solidly to re-print
those textiles and they are now hanging gloriously from the gallery's
ceiling. The opening has been re-scheduled for this Saturday 6 May at
2:30pm. Andrea will give a floor talk afterwards.

GUILD UNLIMITED
An exhibition is planned to tour from late 2001 which places the history of
guilds in a contemporary context. The craft practitioners involved will each
work with a group of people who share a work practice but have no formal
association (e.g., cappuccino pullers, web site designers, call operators).
On display will be ceremonial objects, such as rings or banners, that
recognise the knowledge and skill shared by these workers. The exhibition
invokes the spirit of the Arts & Crafts movement in a time when work
associations are declining. More information is available at the web site at

BULLETIN
The next issue of the Craft Bulletin will include details of the kinds of
organisations that craft practitioners might join. This includes not only
guilds and workshops, but also other emerging craft networks online. A form
for details to be published will be distributed, but to make sure your
association receives one, please contact Craft Victoria.
CHIME
The Guide Dogs Association is looking for someone who can make a wind chime
using dog tags.
SHELF
We are currently looking for someone to curate our 'in-between' exhibitions
in our front window.

ANDREW WOOD - READING THE COUNTRY
Exhibition at Craft Victoria 1 June - 1 July 2000
Andrew Wood's tables, cabinets and stands evoke the beauty of Victoria's
timbers, including manna gum, silver wattle, yellow box, myrtle and sweet
bursia. One of the surfaces is made by insects.

VIKING POINT OF VIEW
Lenses have been discovered that reveal great sophistication in Viking
craft. Made from rock-crystal, the lenses have an accurate shape that
betrays the work of a master craftsman. The late Dr Karl-Heinz Wilms first
heard of the so-called "Visby" lens in 1990 when he was searching for
exhibits for a Munich museum. The Gotland crystals provide the first
evidence that sophisticated lens-making techniques were being used by
craftsmen over a 1,000 years ago.
