I'm a GP. NHS Direct has had v little effect on our workload; if anything it
has slightly increased inappropriate attendances! I think A&E depts &
ambulance services are bearing the brunt of it as many people are directed
to go hospital or call an ambulance.
On the positive side, lots of my patients have said they found it very
useful being able to talk to someone anytime, without bothering their GP. I
haven't noticed any reduction in my calls so I guess these people wouldn't
have called me anyway!
What measures should be used to judge how cost-effective NHS Direct is?

New helpline just launched in NZ
a 2 year pilot in 3 sites using Access health computerised system for nurse
triage
Could any of the GPs and Emergency specialists in the UK shed some light on
just what impact NHS direct is having after a year or so in operation?
No doubt my management colleagues here have great expectations that
helplines will reduce our "inappropriate" attenders. I remain sceptical.
