David,
In theory we take 3 sessions off our daytime committments when
we work a night. So come to work at 17:00 one day. Spend the
evening working and the night resident. Then go home at lunchtime
the next day.
In practice it is very hard to be disciplined enough to stick to this
pattern. There is a cultural change required to make this working
pattern a success. The rest of the hospital (meetings!) expects
consultants to work from 9 to 5, so a different pattern is hard to
stick to.
