This situation is not unique to the US or Christianity. We have
fundamentalists of our own (the Islamic type). They try their best to
refute the evolution theory. They sometimes organize conferences in
scientific disguise, or launch campaigns. For some, defining people
'creative' are considered offensive as they think only 'God' can be
creative.
