Research Associates
Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration
in
Dependability of Computer-Based Systems
As a result of a major award from the EPSRC, we are looking to recruit up
to 20 Research Associates.
The interdisciplinary nature of the project means that candidates may come
from computer science, social science or
psychology backgrounds. Ideal candidates will have experience of
interdisciplinary research (e.g. computer scientists
interested in social/cognitive sciences to complement our existing social
scientists interested in CS).
The six year Research Collaboration, led by the University of Newcastle in
association with City University (London),
University of Edinburgh, Lancaster University and University of York, takes
a systems perspective and emphasises that
computer-based systems can be dependable only if the human involvement is
recognised from their inception.
The Principal Investigators at the five institutions are Stuart Anderson,
Alan Burns, Cliff Jones, Bev Littlewood and Ian
Sommerville. Other major figures include Peter Ayton, John Dobson, Michael
Harrison, John Hughes, Donald MacKenzie,
Andrew Monk, Martin Newby, Brian Randell, Pete Sawyer, Lorenzo Strigini and
Robin Williams.
Around 20 distinguished experts have agreed to take part for varying
periods of time as Senior Visiting Research Fellows.
The long-term research will focus on five themes which categorise different
aspects of dependability. The themes are Risk,
Timeliness, Diversity, Responsibility, and Structure. Project Activities
will work on specific applications in association with
our industrial collaborators.
The majority of posts will be at IA and II levels (salary scales £16,286 -
£24,479 and £22,579 - £30,065) but we would
also be delighted to hear from more experienced candidates. Initial
appointments will be for up to three years and will be
based at one institution, but we would strongly encourage candidates who
wished to move between institutions at some
agreed stage.
Candidates can obtain further information including application procedures
by writing to the overall project director
Professor C B Jones, Dept. of Computing Science, University of Newcastle,
Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7RU (e-mail

There are also openings for PhD studentships.
Closing date for applications: 9 June 2000.
