STREAMED AUDIO FOR WEB-BASED COURSES
A one-day workshop from ALT
DATE: 4 July 2000
VENUE: University of Portsmouth
TIME: 0930-1630
COST: stlg 70 (ALT members), stlg 120 (non-members)
OVERVIEW
The workshop locates audio and streamed audio in the range of
educational multimedia and considers the pedagogic and
technological issues surrounding its use.
Streaming audio has many advantages for web-based educational
applications:
* Audio is relatively easy to produce. At its simplest a microphone,
a sound card and suitable software is all that is needed
* The educational value of a "talking head" on video is doubtful
* Streamed audio files are much smaller than streamed video of
comparable duration, in fact, small enough to work well through a
modem, and so a good match for current resources
* Talking about some images projected as slides is a well-
understood form of didactic teaching that translates easily into a
web-based environment
* The approach is very useful for distant learners who may be
working through a modem
The workshop will review the technologies available for developing
streamed audio and offer participants practice in developing
streamed audio using various approaches. Practical work will
enable participants to create their own streamed audio in which a
spoken commentary is automatically synchronised with a set of
slides that may themselves be produced using PowerPoint,
scanned images, digital photographs or html text. Educational
applications of the technology are developed by exercises and
through practical work.
