According to a Wriiten Answer in Hansard on 6/12/99 cl 376w, some 17.5 per cent of pensioner units (1,486,000 total) were in receipt of Income Support in May
1997. Note that the DSS defines pensioners as benefit units where either the claimant and/or partner are aged 60 or over.
The WA gives a breakdown showing that 6.5 per cent of pensioner couples (263,000) were on IS, as were 27.5 per cent of
singles (1,223,000).
The number of pensioners was shown to have gone down to 244,000 and 1,161,000 respectively by May 1999. No
percentages were given, presumably because they didn't have a reliable denominator figure (?), but this suggests a proportion
now of around 16.5 per cent.
Hope this helps,
Paul A
