Mike Smith has asked me to put this query on the website for him, as he is
preoccupied with problems arising from the serious illness of a member of
his family.
Ms Elisabeth Wadge, a Ph.D. student at Newnham College, Cambridge,
is researching 'late Victorian spiritualism and its influence on the
literature of the period.' 'My final thesis chapter', she adds, 'explores
Kipling's relationship with the supernatural in many of his short stories.'
She wrote to Mike asking if the society could suggest any useful
sources. She particularly asked about Kipling's sister, and I was able to
give her some pointers about Trix's career as a medium and the connexion
with the story "'They'". It was on her behalf that I recently appealed
for help in tracing the quotation 'I know there is [something in
spiritualism]. Have nothing to do with it.'
If anyone has any thoughts or information that might be of use to
Ms Wadge, she can be contacted by email on [log in to unmask]
Regards to all, Lisa Lewis
