I was the mentor who contacted Trisha about this today because:
It seems that there others who are trying to offer this service to
students and are unsure about what they should be doing. I feel that
there is a difference between being a tutor, being a member of academic
staff and being a mentor. This at times may confuse students....
At Derby we too have a closed web based bulletin board, group e mails
and a news letter. We proactively contact students, and plead with them
to contact each other.
I still feel that there is room for a mentoring role.
Many grants to support post-grad education are reliant upon having a
mentor, yet this role in itself is not supported!
One problem that could be avoided with distance learning is the student
who is abandoned once the course is completed... if they belong to a web
based support group they would still be a part of this community.
I am game, maybe a bit green- maybe I need a mentor to set up a mail
base group!!
