Sam,
I use MapInfo in my capacity as Research Officer with the Sussex
Archaeological Society. It is good on both the macro and micro scale. As
it is windows based it is very easy to pick up and use. I recommend it (it
was drawn to my attention by the department of Geography at Portsmouth
University who have successfully used it for multi-disciplinary regional
work). If you hit problems you can email me at ARCH (I am leaving this post
on Friday for research fellowship at Birmingham University) at
