are proud to host
DANTE2000
-Friday to Sunday, April 7 - 9, 2000
-Casa Italiana at Columbia University in the City of New York
(117th St. and Amsterdam Avenue)
On April 7-9, 2000 the Dante Society of America and The Italian Academy for
Advanced Studies in America at Columbia University will host DANTE2000, a
celebration of the life and works of the medieval poet and prose writer, Dante
Alighieri. For over 650 years, the brilliant artistry of Dante has sparked
controversy among and provided inspiration to generations of writers,
philosophers, theologians and artists, and has profoundly influenced the West=s
concepts of heaven and hell, good and evil. The conference, to be held in the
Casa Italiana on the campus of Columbia University, will present an
international array of Dante scholars. It will also be broadcast live online
and will be available thereafter in the archive. It will revisit the history
of Dante studies and chart new paths of exploration for the next millennium.
DANTE2000 is the first major academic forum on Dante sponsored by the Dante
Society of America and will highlight the particular contributions of American
scholarship to Dante studies.
Session titles include: Dante and Gender; Eros and Mysticism; The Body; Dante
and Ovid; Material Culture; Science and Philosophy; Eschatology; Reception and
