Columbia University's Summer Study Program in Scandiano, Italy
This six-week summer program provides an unparalleled opportunity for
complete immersion in Italian language, customs, and culture. The courses:
Intensive Intermediate Italian Language, Boiardo and Ariosto, and Italian
Theater Practicum, are taught by three regular faculty members from
Columbia University, Scott Failla, Jo Ann Cavallo, and Vittorio Capotorto.
Students may take either one or two courses, which meet in Boiardo's
Renaissance castle that has been renovated to a twentieth-century comfort
level.
The community of Scandiano welcomes students enthusiastically. Students
may choose to live with local families or in a local hotel. Program
activities include hiking and biking in the Apennines, excursions to
cultural events including an opera in Verona, and trips to nearby cities
such as Bologna and Parma. Students also enjoy the regional cuisine, often
called the best in Italy, both with their families and in restaurants.
The town of Scandiano, with a population of 23,000, is located in the
region of Emilia-Romagna between the Po Valley and the Apennine Mountains.
Florence, Pisa, and Siena are close enough for weekend trips.

A Theater Workshop for Students of Italian Language and Literature
Columbia University Summer Program in Scandiano (RE), Italy, 2000
regione dell'Emilia Romagna.
teatro italiano (in italiano) a New York.

Columbia University's Department of Italian is delighted to announce the
integration of two successful Italian language initiatives: our Summer
Program in Scandiano and our Italian Theater Practicum course.
The Summer Program, begun in 1995, immerses students in Italian
language, customs, and culture in a small, prosperous town in North Central
Italy. The local community welcomes our students as guests and potential
friends in the spirit of cultural exchange. The interaction between our
students and the town has been developed over past years through homestays,
excursions and outings, sports events, picnics and parties.
In the Italian Theater Practicum course, created and taught by Vittorio
Capotorto on the New York Morningside campus since 1998, attention to
grammar, stylistics, and oral skills is combined with textual analysis,
character exploration, and the study of acting techniques. Thanks to this
course--the only one of its kind that we know of--Columbia has also been
able to fill the need for Italian theater in Italian language in New York
City.
In adding this course to our Summer Program, we not only build on the
collaborative spirit between our American students and the residents of our
Italian host town, but we offer an innovative and original collective
cultural project. This summer Mr. Capotorto will teach and direct *Orlando
Innamorato in commedia,* a three-act play adapted from episodes of Matteo
Maria Boiardo's Renaissance romance epic. This project is an attempt to
give immediacy to a rich and variegated poem that inspired Ariosto, Tasso,
Spenser, Milton, and others, and that is surprisingly entertaining and
meaningful in our own day.
The Summer Program in Scandiano 2000 will also offer Intensive
Intermediate Italian taught by Scott Failla, as well as my course, Boiardo
and Ariosto, which is open to graduate students and advanced undergraduates.
