Vehicle Excise Duty Reforms
The Government's plan to reform Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) to ensure a
cleaner environment was a prominent feature of the Chancellor's March 21
budget. A package of changes was announced to reform VED to encourage the
use of smaller, cleaner, fuel efficient cars.
Key changes to the VED system will be introduced over the next year to
promote the Government's reforms:
Changes To Existing Cars
VED By Engine Size - From March 2001
Currently cars with an engine size of 1100cc or less, pay in the Private
Light Goods (PLG) class a "reduced rate" of £100. From March 2001 the
"reduced rate" will be increased to £105 and extended to cars with an engine
size of 1200cc or less. Cars with an engine size of above 1200cc will pay
the "standard rate" of £160 for a vehicle licence taken out from March 2001.
Brand new cars registered from 1st March 2001 will have a new tax regime
applied.
