Europe at the Millenium: New Ideas
Since it's inauguration in 1996, the Savaria International Summer University
(SISU) has brought together a diverse group of young international scholars
>from the Central and East European region and the wider world to discuss,
debate and formulate ideas on the relationship between the EU and Central
Europe. Through ISES' extensive network of academic partnerships, the SSU
has attracted some of the world's leading scholars in the field. The
incorporation of informal Café Bloom evenings also enables the SISU to
debate issues which are less directly related to the SSU or to allow for
greater discussion of issues raised in the day sessions.
The Theme
The theme for the SISU 2000 is "Europe at the Millenium: New Ideas". ISES
has been at the forefront of generating new ideas and in particular a richer
understanding of European Studies in Hungary. We have decided that the SISU
2000 should build on this.
A special roundtable: 10 years on - Where are we now in Central and East
Europe?
Followed by
A two week Summer University focusing on new ideas related to
socio-political, economic, security and human rights questions and European
integration.
Speakers will include:
Ivo Banac, Yale University, USA
Andras Inotai, Director, Institute for World Economics, Budapest
Claus Offe, Universitat Humboldt, Berlin
Tibor Palankai, Rector, University of Economics, Budapest
George Schopflin, School of East European and Slavonic Studies, University
of London
Phillipe Schmitter, European University Institute, Florence and Stanford
University, USA
These issues are treated from a range of disciplinary perspectives and are
analysed in both theoretical and substantive/empirical contexts.
