Let me tell you a story - a long long time ago in 1909, in a cinema there was an old lady sitting in a Merlin Bath chair watching a silent movie. As she watched she was
also eating raw peanuts. She spat a shell out,it bounced on the floor and then into a gas lamp. The gas lamp
exploded and killed 150 people.
The only truth about this story is there really was a
Merlin bath chair.
Now for some reality:
Ask for specific evidence. More and more fire brigades are refusing to believe this myth.
If there is a local regulations, which regulation?
As far s I know there has been no evidence (on a world
wide basis) to support this old chestnut.
If a building is so dangerous that wheelchair users are prevented using it, then it is far too dangerous for members of the public it should be closed down immediately and demolished. to make way for a modern building.
Clearly the owners cannot be operating an honest equal opportunities policy.
Laurence is right about the issue of drunks, although one hopes that schools discourage them from entering school premises.
I hope that the above helps

I have a question and appreciate your help. > In Shapiro's "No Pity", it says "school principal deemed > a young girl in a wheelchair "fire hazard"". In this > context, "fire hazard" means something that > might prevent people from fleeing in case of fire, > is this correct? Didn't you know?...People in wheelchairs are self-combustable. Fist sign of panic and *poof* they explode into flames! Actually, I have not heard of this exact case but I have heard this excuse being used as a grounds for disciminatory access to a nightclub. I believe it is based on the idea that they will block the passageway. The argument holds no ground at all. A wheelchair is easier to push than a drunk, panicking able-bod. It would be important to note though, whether places do have fire exits that can be used by wheelchair users. That would be typical to provide wheelchair access but no wheelchair fire exit. Best regards Laurence Bathurst
